Having worked in the fitness industry since 1990, we quickly realised that when it came to effective cardio-vascular training, there is generally a lack of objective bespoke information available for people to work with. When we looked specifically at what most people wanted, we were able to identify three key overlapping areas of aspiration:

• Weight loss and a reduction in percentage body fat
• Improvements in general health and fitness
• Performance orientated goals (often sports/event specific)

When we considered what information was required in order for these goals to be successfully and consistently achieved, we again found a widespread absence of clinical grade data available to assist people who were often pressured for time.

In the absence of such data, individuals and trainers alike are left to guess exactly how and what they should be doing in order to best achieve their goals and optimise their potential in the limited time available. Experience will typically refine guesses, but important decisions will still come down to subjective impressions. These impressions are easily influenced by hope and aspiration rather than informed by objective assessment.
